Water, due to its hydrogen bonds and polarity, has high surface tension. The water striders are able to stand on the water because the surface tension allows them to stay on top of the water without breaking the surface tension. The water around the water strider in the back was treated with soap. Soap, a surfactant breaks the surface tension of the water and the water strider is unable to stand. It still floats, however, because the bug is less dense than the water.
